Dakar, Senegal — The Dakar American University of Science & Technology (DAUST) and the Community Innovation Hub (CIH) have officially entered a strategic partnership to drive community-centered technological innovation in Senegal. The collaboration is grounded in a shared vision: harnessing science, technology, and creativity to solve pressing local challenges and empower the next generation of innovators.
A Strategic Collaboration for Community Impact
Under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), DAUST and CIH will jointly design, test, and scale innovative solutions that respond to community needs across sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, water management, and environmental sustainability. The partnership aims to combine DAUST’s strong academic and technical expertise with CIH’s experience in grassroots innovation and social impact.
The MoU establishes a framework for collaborative innovation, emphasizing applied research, technology adaptation, and knowledge exchange. Both institutions share a goal of bridging the gap between academic research and community application, ensuring that emerging technologies are relevant, accessible, and impactful for Senegalese communities.
“This collaboration is about transforming the creativity and wisdom of communities into innovations that bring lasting solutions to their most urgent challenges” said Assiatou Kama-Niang (Co-founder and Executive Director at CIH) and (Project Manager at DAUST) during the kickoff meeting. “By connecting young engineers and innovators with community challenges, we can co-create technologies that are practical, inclusive, and sustainable.”
Empowering Students and Communities
A key feature of the DAUST x CIH partnership is its focus on student engagement and experiential learning. The collaboration will provide DAUST students with opportunities to participate in real-world projects, innovation challenges, and prototype development based on community needs identified by CIH.
Sidy Ndao, the president of DAUST, underlined that “With CIH, students design not just for communities, but with them, they will gain hands-on experience in problem-solving, design thinking, and entrepreneurship, while contributing directly to sustainable development at the community level”.
Building a Framework for Sustainable Innovation
Beyond specific projects, the DAUST x CIH collaboration lays out the foundation for a long-term innovation and capacity-building ecosystem. The partnership envisions a range of joint initiatives, including:
- Thematic research collaborations in areas such as health, agriculture, and climate resilience — with a focus on strengthening national vaccine uptake, and developing climate-resilient solutions that empower communities, especially women and youth.
- Innovation labs and workshops to prototype and test locally relevant solutions.
- Mentorship and training programs to nurture student-led startups and promote entrepreneurial thinking.
- Community outreach activities that advance digital inclusion, health awareness, and environmental sustainability, ensuring that innovation benefits those most in need.
“By combining DAUST’s academic rigor with CIH’s community networks, we are creating a pathway for sustainable, inclusive innovation,” said Sylvia Dooper. “This partnership represents a new model for impact-driven collaboration.”
Looking Ahead
As implementation progresses, DAUST and CIH plan to expand their collaboration to include technology transfer programs, and entrepreneurship incubation. The ultimate vision is to make Senegal a leader in community-centered, technology-enabled solutions that advance the country’s sustainable development goals.
Both institutions reaffirm their shared commitment to fostering inclusive growth through innovation, and to inspiring a new generation of problem-solvers ready to shape the future of Senegal and beyond.
